Texas Republicans head to the polls Tuesday for one of the most closely watched runoff elections in the country, with the GOP U.S. Senate runoff between John Cornyn and Ken Paxton dominating national political attention.
The race has evolved into a broader battle between the Republican establishment and the party’s Trump-aligned conservative wing, with President Donald Trump endorsing Paxton in the final stretch of the campaign.
Trump called Paxton a “true MAGA warrior,” immediately reshaping the runoff and energizing conservative grassroots voters across Texas. Cornyn, meanwhile, has argued he represents the stronger Republican choice for November, warning Democrats could become competitive if Paxton wins the nomination.
Recent polling has shown the race tightening, with several late surveys placing Paxton narrowly ahead following Trump’s endorsement. Political strategists from both parties are closely watching suburban turnout, early voting trends, and grassroots conservative enthusiasm statewide.

Attorney General Race Draws National Attention
Beyond the Senate race, Texas voters will also decide the open Republican attorney general runoff to replace Paxton.
The contest features conservative State Senator Mayes Middleton and Republican Congressman Chip Roy, one of the nation’s best-known conservative lawmakers and a prominent member of the House Freedom Caucus.
Roy previously served as chief of staff to Senator Ted Cruz and worked inside the Texas Attorney General’s office before being elected to Congress. The runoff has become a closely watched ideological battle within the Republican Party.
Polling in the attorney general contest has generally shown Middleton holding a modest advantage, aided largely by heavy personal campaign spending. A recent University of Houston survey showed Middleton leading Roy 48% to 39%, with undecided voters still remaining in play heading into Election Day.
The race also gained attention earlier in the cycle after Trump endorsed former U.S. Attorney John Bash before Bash later withdrew from the race due to a family health matter.

Other Key Texas Runoff Battles
Several additional runoff races across Texas are also drawing statewide attention, including contests for the Railroad Commission, congressional seats, and legislative districts.
Republican strategists view the runoffs as another important test of Trump’s continued influence inside GOP primaries and whether conservative grassroots turnout can continue driving Republican politics heading into November.
Texas has already seen strong early voting activity, with millions spent statewide on television advertising, digital campaigns, direct mail, and turnout operations.

National Implications
The outcome of Tuesday’s runoffs could carry implications far beyond Texas.
Republicans nationally are watching to see whether GOP voters continue moving toward candidates more closely aligned with Trump and the MAGA movement, or whether establishment-backed Republicans can still maintain influence in major statewide contests.
The winner of the Senate runoff will likely face Democratic nominee James Talarico in what could become one of the nation’s highest-profile Senate races heading into the November 2026 general election.
