Sen. Fetterman Says He’ll Leave Democratic Party If It Becomes Anti-Israel

U.S. Senator John Fetterman says he would leave the Democratic Party if it officially becomes anti-Israel, drawing a clear line with his own party.

“If our party ever becomes, and just make it official, as the anti-Israel party, that’s when I would leave,” the Pennsylvania Democrat said during The Hill and NewsNation’s Nation Summit. Fetterman called support for Israel an issue of “moral clarity.”

Fetterman emphasized that he has not changed his registration and does not currently plan to become a Republican. He remains aligned with Democrats on abortion rights, labor unions, marijuana legalization and federal nutrition programs, but he made clear that abandoning Israel would be a political and moral red line.

His comments came as Democratic divisions over Israel continue to deepen.

The House recently rejected an amendment that would have eliminated $3.3 billion in annual U.S. military assistance to Israel. The proposal failed 314–104, but 103 Democrats joined Republican Congressman Thomas Massie in supporting it. Democratic leaders were also split, with House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries opposing the amendment and Democratic Whip Katherine Clark supporting it.

Since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, Fetterman has remained one of Israel’s strongest Democratic supporters in Congress. He has backed military assistance, opposed efforts to block weapons sales and defended Israel’s right to fight Hamas, Hezbollah and other Iranian-backed terrorist organizations.

His position has increasingly separated him from progressive activists and fueled speculation that he could eventually become an independent or switch parties.

Fetterman is not scheduled to face voters again until 2028. Whether he runs as a Democrat, Republican or independent remains unknown. What is clear is that he is prepared to place his support for Israel ahead of party loyalty.

At a time when many elected officials follow their party’s political winds, Fetterman is delivering a blunt warning: If Democrats abandon Israel, they may lose him too.
